2009 - BS Chemistry, University of Texas

    Academic Background

Dr Shia has a multidisciplinary background in the fields of analytical chemistry, clinical diagnostics, and bioengineering. In her PhD work, she developed a biosensor for biowarfare agent detection. She also applied this biosensor platform to screen antibodies for immunoassay optimization towards serum/plasma biomarkers relevant to clinical diagnostics. Specifically, she utilized this platform to study biomarkers for cancers, heart diseases, and sepsis. She has experience in method development to quantify urinary metabolites associated with tobacco exposure via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) from her time working for the Tobacco Exposure Biomarkers Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. She led her team through instrument method transfer, coordinated multiple validation studies to confirm assay stability and ruggedness, and developed and refined QA/QC criteria in adherence with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines for laboratory audits. She has experience using software tools such as OriginLab, GraphPad Prism, SigmaPlot, R, and SQL for statistical analysis.

    Publishing History

Dr Shia has published several peer-reviewed papers, both as first author and co-author, in journals including Analytical Chemistry, Analyst, and Clinical Biochemistry. She has presented at several international conferences giving both oral and poster presentations.

    Editing and Reviewing Experience

Dr Shia has edited and reviewed manuscripts for her co-authors at her affiliated institutions. During her doctoral training, she helped her peer students in editing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and posters and slides for conference presentations. Later, as a research scientist for the CDC, her editing focus was geared more towards regulatory documents and protocols within that organization. She has been a peer reviewer for journal topics in analytical chemistry, biotechnology, clinical sciences, epidemiology, and other public health areas. She joined Edanz as an editor in 2021

    Writing Experience

Dr Shia has experience writing journal articles throughout her PhD and in her position as a government research scientist for the CDC. She contributed to multiple successful research proposals at various grant funding agencies, including a predoctoral fellowship award from the American Heart Association during her PhD training. In her role at the CDC, she participated in writing a wide range of documents including research reports, technical protocols for regulatory audits, and conference presentation abstracts and slides.
