Waseda University, Japan, has signed up Edanz Group as a regular supplier of educational services, including seminars and interactive workshops in research communication for its staff and students.

Both small- and large-group educational events will be provided by the Edanz Education and Engagement Team to the different campuses of Waseda University starting from academic year 2015. Topics that have been requested for the tailored seminars and workshops include manuscript writing, journal selection, journal submission and peer review ethics, conference presentation, and grant application writing.

On 29 June 2015, Dr Trevor Lane and Dr Andrew Jackson led a writing workshop in the main Waseda, Tokyo, campus on preparing effective research grant applications. The workshop attendees, who were mainly early-career researchers, learned about refining a research topic, choosing the most appropriate study design, choosing collaborators, and drafting applications in a persuasive and professional way. Dr Lane explained he had edited more than a hundred grant and award applications in his former position in The University of Hong Kong, with more than a third having been successful. He shared some Dos and Don'ts with the audience and answered their questions on application requirements and passing the grant peer review process.

The next workshop in the series is on 11 September 2015, when Dr Andrew Jackson and Dr Kate Harris will train researchers in materials sciences how to prepare manuscripts for publication in international peer-reviewed journals. The next after that will be on 26 October 2015, on manuscript writing for information and communications technology researchers, led by Dr Trevor Lane and Ms Ayli Chong.
