Early-career researchers and new graduate students at Kumamoto University, Japan, learned how to prepare and submit research reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals during a day of seminars from Edanz Group on 18 December 2015.

Edanz held two seminars for 100 participants each, focusing on the physical sciences in the morning and on life and medical sciences in the afternoon. In each seminar, Dr Trevor Lane and Dr Eri Kinoshita, who have both worked for international peer-reviewed academic journals, outlined the steps involved in drafting a research manuscript, adhering to a journal's guidelines and requirements, and navigating submission and peer review procedures.

Using discipline-specific examples, the presenters showed before-and-after versions of text to raise awareness of appropriate language to use in academic writing. Hints and checklists were given on how to keep research reporting clear, concise, complete, and compelling.

Both audiences were also introduced to free online tools from Edanz that have been designed to help researchers in their publishing journey--namely, the Edanz Journal Selector and the elearning platform Edanz Author Academy.
