On 25-26 January 2016, Dr Trevor Lane and Dr Julian Tang were invited to Gunma University to hold two interactive workshops for 80 postgraduate students and early-career researchers in medicine and in science and technology.

The first day's workshop in the medical campus of the university was designed to help the participants effectively communicate their research findings in slides and poster presentations at international conferences. The content included both the science and art of making presentation materials. The attendees commented that they learned how to organize and present their findings and illustrations, and that the workshop was useful for not only English but also Japanese conference presentations.

The second day's workshop in the science and technology campus trained the participants to effectively communicate their research findings in international peer-reviewed journals. The attendees were appreciative, giving comments such as "I gained so much knowledge about how to write my manuscripts in English. Thank you very much." and "It was a wonderful seminar. I learned a lot today."

To allow the participants to continue learning about publishing their research manuscripts in academic journals, they were referred to the free Edanz e-learning platform Author Academy.
