2007 - BSc (Hons) Pharmacology, University of Glasgow

    Academic Background

Dr Farmer is an experienced biological researcher with a background in neurophysiology and cardiovascular pharmacology. He has undertaken post-doctoral training at the Florey institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health and the University of Melbourne. His focus during this time was in vivo autonomic neurophysiological research, including cardiorespiratory control, hierarchies of autonomic control, the neural control of inflammation, and the neurophysiology of the cough reflex. This largely involved electrophysiological experiments, as well as the use of virally delivered optogenetic tools. He completed his PhD training at the University of Glasgow, during which time he studied cardiovascular pharmacology in the context of vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and pulmonary hypertension.

    Publishing History

Dr Farmer has contributed to 17 peer-reviewed publications, seven as first or senior author, in journals including Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Journal of Neuroscience, Brain, Behavior and Immunity, American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Physiology, and Scientific Reports. He has given oral presentations at numerous international meetings including invited talks at Experimental Biology and the Australasian Neuroscience Society Meeting.

    Editing and Reviewing Experience

In addition to editing manuscripts for colleagues and students, Dr Farmer has provided peer review for The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and Clinical, Experimental Lung Research, and Respiration Physiology and Neurobiology. Dr Farmer joined Edanz as an editor in 2022.

    Writing Experience

In addition to his scientific manuscripts, Dr Farmer has written a number of science articles aimed at the layperson for publications including The Conversation and Cosmos magazine.
