2015 - PhD Groundwater, University of the Western Cape
2006 - MSc Groundwater, University of the Western Cape
1977 - BSc (Hons) Geology and Physics, University of Sheffield
Dr Seward has expertise in hydrogeology, integrated water resource management and sustainability. His MSc research focused on groundwater monitoring and his PhD research addressed groundwater governance in South Africa. He worked for the South African Department of Water Affairs for 32 years, initially as a hydrogeologist and subsequently as a scientific manager, where his responsibilities included geological mapping, geophysics, pump tests, borehole drilling, and report writing. Since taking early retirement, Dr Seward has been involved in a 2-year Water Research Commission project investigating groundwater governance and the role of institutions, including government departments. He has assisted ESL students and university personnel with the writing and editing of their academic papers and has acted as a peer reviewer for several academic journals. Dr Seward’s own published papers focus on aspects of sustainability, ranging from specialized ‘hard science’ issues in the discipline of hydrogeology to more general ‘soft science’ issues such as the role of stakeholders, institutional support, and water law. He uses his graduate education in physics and geology, his experience in hydrogeology and water sciences, and his post-graduate research into the sustainability of water use to edit a broad range of topics in the Earth, environmental and water sciences. Dr Seward joined Edanz Group as an editor in 2015.
