On behalf of Edanz Group, Dr Trevor Lane (Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant) conducted two days of publishing seminars for students and staff of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan, on 21-22 November 2016.

The two topics covered were writing effective clinical manuscripts and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed medical or dental journals. Having worked for general and specialist medical journals and having edited many clinical research manuscripts, Dr Lane shared insights into what medical editors and peer reviewers look for, how to minimize the chances of journal rejection, and how to navigate the peer review process.

The audience of 100 gained knowledge in writing clear, concise, complete, and compelling clinical research papers that adhere to journals' ethics and style guidelines. They also learned how to select a journal based on the evidence level and implications of a study, craft an effective submission cover letter, revise a manuscript according to peer reviewer comments, and write a point-by-point response letter.

The feedback forms showed that all members of the audience found the seminars useful or very useful. Attendees were particularly appreciative of the handouts, such as editing and proofreading tips, word lists, submission checklists, and letter templates.
