On 8-9 March 2016, Dr Andrew Jackson and Mr Alan Purvis led two one-day manuscript writing workshops for engineering postgraduate students at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Aimed at beginner-level authors, the two classes consisted of mini-seminars on academic English, how to structure a manuscript, and how to submit a manuscript to a peer-reviewed science journal. Each section was separated by class exercises to practice the points taught.

All 30 students in each class said they found the workshop useful or very useful, and all said they thought the workshops should be held again for the benefit of future students.

Both students and organizers were appreciative of each day's event, and the students were keen to continue self-directed learning about manuscript writing using the Edanz e-learning platform Author Academy.

The comments written by the workshop attendees in the feedback forms showed that some were already preparing manuscripts and would immediately apply the new knowledge and skills learned. "I am currently trying to submit a paper, and the workshop provided clear and easy guidelines for writing that I will use," wrote one participant. Others wrote: "There were lots of good practical hints", "I got many tips to write my paper", and "This opportunity was very valuable for me".
