By popular demand, Edanz Group was invited back to Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in March 2017 to conduct individual consultations to help researchers improve their manuscript writing.

On 7-10 March 2017, Dr Trevor Lane (Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant) and Ms Ayli Chong (Editor and Project Coordinator) led interactive workshops and writing clinics in academic writing for early- and mid-career researchers in a variety of disciplines, including engineering, bioengineering, medicine, ecology, chemistry, and social sciences.

On the middle two days, Dr Lane and Ms Chong--both trained English teachers with science backgrounds--led workshops with writing activities for 50 researchers. The sessions included analyzing and improving sample text written by Japanese authors to raise awareness of common language mistakes when drafting research manuscripts. Multiple improvements were offered to the class, sometimes with different versions, depending on nuance, journal tone/style, personal preference, and overall information flow.

Over lunchtime, the workshop participants had the opportunity to ask the presenters about writing and publishing strategies, as well as raise language queries and clarify any content presented in the workshop session.

On the first and last day, registered individuals brought writing samples for live appraisal, editing, or guided revision. Advice on major rewriting or restructuring was given on the first day, and participants were requested to bring the revised sample to the second consultation on the last day. Authors noticed marked improvements in their own writing after heeding the advice given and putting into practice the workshop tips.

The organizers were happy with the four-day educational event and said they hoped to add it as a regular event in their academic calendar.
