In October 2016, Edanz Group (known as Liwenbianji in China) teamed up with the international journal Science, published by the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science), to provide two career development workshops in Beijing, China.

The two half-day Researcher Success Workshops titled Develop Your Science Career Skills were held in the Beijing International Convention Center, on 18 and 19 October. They were each attended by 40 specially selected graduate research students from the Beijing area. Each workshop was introduced by representatives from the Science Beijing office and was delivered by Dr Trevor Lane, Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant of Edanz Group.

Jointly designed by Edanz and Science for early-career researchers, each workshop covered a wide variety of transferable skills sought by employers, including analysis and critical thinking, leadership, effective communication, and public speaking. Specific advice was given on preparing a CV/resume and writing job application letters.

Given that most workshop participants were seeking research careers, a quick tour of peer-reviewed journal publishing was included, with tips for accurate, ethical, and impactful research reporting. Communicating research to non-academic audiences was also covered, to enable researchers to engage with all stakeholders during their careers.

Hands-on activities were used to help the audience develop a self-brand, identify goals for both hard and soft skills, and practice interviewing and networking skills. Most participants were eager to present their answers in class and take part in the role plays, and they were duly rewarded with Science and Edanz souvenirs.

During the activity discussions, members of the audience said they wanted longer-term assistance with skills development,  and they were introduced to the free AAAS Science Careers website, as well as free online tools available on the Edanz website--namely, the Journal Selector, elearning platform Author Academy, and a beta version of the guided writing platform Author Path.
